Articling a Student

Professional surveyors from other jurisdictions or persons who wish to obtain a license as an Ontario Land Surveyor, who have acquired the necessary academic training required by the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors and who have the agreement of an Articling Surveyor may apply, pursuant to Sec. 23 of Ontario Regulation 1026, to the Association to become an Articling Student. Additional information may be found here.

Current Articling System for Students

The current articling system is a significant departure from the system that had been in place for many years.  It replaced the requirement to submit quarterly work reports and assignments with a formal learning plan that requires the student to gain competency in 14 Essential Areas of Knowledge (EAKs).  There is no direct supervision of students by an Academic and Experience Requirements Committee monitor, and the articling surveyor is solely responsible for providing the necessary training and for certifying that the student has achieved an acceptable mastery of each of the EAKs.  Assignments are available for those EAKs that cannot be achieved through the student’s normal work experience. Details of the new system, the new Articling Student Handbook and other related documents may be found here.

The AOLS maintains a ”Cybrary” as an educational resource for articling students. User registration is required to fully access all of the resources.
