In December 2018, Thomas Hoppe presented a webinar for AOLS members on “Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems (RPAS) for Surveyors”.
That webinar was quite popular with our members, indicating a strong interest in the topic.
In order to develop this topic further, we have approached Thomas to develop and present a full-day seminar on RPAS, looking at this technology from a different angle. The full-day course that was developed is practical and management-oriented, concentrating on determining whether this tool/ technology meets the specifications and is applicable to a particular project or not.

As Land Surveyors, we are professionals in the art of observing, measuring and recording. To do so, surveyors utilize highly specialized and precise tools to measure, assign attributes, record, and present spatial data whilst leaving permanent recoverable marks on the ground to witness our work. There is a technical revolution in the Geomatics industry as an exciting new tool has been developed that allows surveyors to survey land in a manner that was typically restricted to those companies with deep pockets. The advent of RPAS' or UAV's to conduct aerial survey and the associated software to allow the production of ortho rectified imagery and digital elevation models in a matter of hours has given the surveyor another cost-effective method to interpret and measure land.

Today, we have RPAS' or UAV's as a relatively new technology to implement into our practices. Many geomatics firms in Canada have a drone in every field vehicle.

This one-day seminar is aimed to help geomatics firms understand how they may implement UAV's into their everyday geomatics practice in order to remain competitive and profit from the use of this technology.

This seminar will explore the basic concepts of what it takes to use UAV technology and how to manage it so as to make it another tool in our tool box. As the acceptance and use of RPAS technology increases, we need only understand what it takes to utilize it effectively and make a profit at doing so.

This seminar will cover the following topics:
• Introduction - Learning objectives
• Role of UAV's
• UAV Project Management
• Pricing your project
• Where to start

Please see the Seminar Overview for more details.
