About the Mapping and Information Resources Branch
The Branch is an essential partner in the management of Ontario's natural resources. We ensure decisions are supported by the best available data and advice through leadership in Crown land surveying, mapping and information management. The Office of the Surveyor General oversees all legal descriptions used to issue surface and mineral rights on Ontario Crown land, land claims settlements and regulatory control on land development and use.

What can I expect to do in this role?
In this role, you will:
• act as a senior legal survey expert on Crown land, surveys and boundaries for Ontario
ministries and Crown Agencies
• conduct hearings and boundary confirmations under the Surveys Act on behalf of the
Surveyor General and perform duties delegated under various Ontario statutes
• lead the development of survey-related policies, procedures, standards and guidelines or support the development of provincial regulations to preserve title integrity and regulator responsibilities
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
• You are a licensed Cadastral Ontario Land Surveyor in good standing with the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors, or have the ability to obtain a license within the first six months of employment (e.g. Licensed members from other Canadian jurisdictions).
• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
Technical Knowledge:
• You have knowledge of the crown survey systems, land law including the Surveys Act, Surveyors Act, Public Lands Act, Mining Act, Municipal and Planning Acts, Indian and Canada Land Surveys Act, and other land related provincial and federal statutes, regulations, treaties and policies.
Communication and interpersonal skills:
• You have proven interpersonal, consensus building, mediation, negotiation and supervisory skills to provide direction to staff, resolve conflicts, and to negotiate with contractors, program staff and large industry partners.
• You have demonstrated communication skills to liaise with all levels of government, Crown
Land Surveyors, private sector surveyors, lawyers and officials.
• You possess superior writing skills to prepare professional reports, affidavits and survey
opinions, policies, proposed legislation, Cabinet submissions, business cases and briefing notes.
Analytical skills:
• You possess strategic thinking, analytical and decision-making skills to contribute to and evaluate strategies, policies, plans and proposals
• You can utilize research and analytical methods and techniques to conduct research, perform policy analysis, evaluate existing policies, procedures and legislation, assess the effectiveness of current programs and policies and to conduct environmental scans.
Project management:
• You have in-depth understanding of project management methodologies, techniques, processes, and tools to lead medium and large scale project teams to develop new policies, procedures and/or projects in support of provincial initiatives or operational efficiencies.
